TDS REVIEW|OPPO Enco X4 降噪真无线耳机体验 – 少数派

This article is TDS Studio’s 33rd article on Minority, and it is still the first for all platforms.

We mentioned the situation of X3 when we wrote about Enco Free4 before. At that time, it seemed that X3 was actually not that great at least in terms of functionality due to the rise of mid-priced noise reduction TWS. In the blink of an eye, the X4 was released, and we bought it for the first time to see if it could provide more improvements compared to the X3.

Packaging & Accessories|Package & Accessories

TDS REVIEW|OPPO Enco X4 降噪真无线耳机体验 – 少数派

Like Free4, Clip2 and other products, the packaging of Enco X4 is also similar in style with a white background, but this time a structure similar to a book girdle is added. After removal, the surface of the box has an embossing consistent with the girdle pattern, and the inner box is black, which is in line with our understanding of OPPO’s flagship product line. Accessories include only three pairs of extra ear tips and no charging cable included. In addition to the silicone filter in the sound outlet, the structure of the earmuffs seems to have learned from Apple’s experience and also uses a special silicone material with front-end foaming. This also makes its passive sound insulation performance slightly better than that of conventional handle-shaped TWS. At the same time, it does not need to be pinched before wearing like full sponge/foam earmuffs, and it has relatively good durability.

Design, Fit & Acoustic Structure|Design, Fit & Acoustic Structure

The Enco X4 is available in three starting colors – soft white, titanium gray, and pink gold. Soft white is a more conventional silver and white splicing, and pink gold is a champagne gold that is lighter pink. The titanium gray we have actually looks a little light purple, and it is indeed the most metallic of the three colors.

The shape of the charging box is still the oblate shape that OPPO is used to, and it still looks like a wedge-shaped structure similar to Clip2 from the side. The sides and chamfers are made using a process similar to anodized sandblasting – of course, it is actually made of plastic, and a large area of the front and back is covered with a skin-like coating. It is not yet certain whether it will become sticky due to aging, but it does feel smoother compared to the X3’s imitation leather treatment. The USB-C port is at the bottom, and the pairing button is on the right side. The workmanship details are quite good, and the interface even has metal edges and chamfers. According to the actual test, the box can be opened easily with one hand, and the hand feels relatively smooth without too strong elastic feedback. The headphone body is inserted into the box, and the magnetic force is moderate and stable.

The headphone body is still in the common shape of handle-type pods. The whole body has a metal sandblasting texture. There is a highlighted area at the end of the cavity for the words “Created with Dynaudio”, which can be regarded as an embellishment of the appearance of this set. The workmanship details are still very good. The cavity is a relatively full oval shape, and is slightly wider vertically than the edge of AirPods Pro 2. There is not much difference in actual wearing. Basically, if you can wear AirPods Pro 2 or are already an OPPO Enco series in-ear user, you will not have any problems wearing Enco X4.

Enco X4 supports IP55 dust-proof and waterproof, which can cope with light rain or sweaty sports scenes.

Operation and software functions|Control & APP

The operation of the Enco X4 relies on the pressure-sensitive area on the side of the earphone handle. Unlike the mainstream solution of making a concave plane, OPPO chose to create a layer of convex texture, which feels good during blind operation. It supports operation recognition of single, double, triple pinch, long press and pinch, and up and down sliding. The default is single playback control, twice for next song, three times for previous song, long press to switch noise reduction mode, and up and down sliding to adjust volume. Since the action is pinching rather than touching, it requires a little force, so it can also reduce accidental touches. The recognition speed and accuracy are both good, basically reaching the top level in TWS and at the same level as the AirPods and Galaxy Buds series.

The response speed and accuracy of the wear recognition are also good enough. It stops when you take it off and resumes when you put it on, with almost no obvious lag. The tactile feel of press action feedback is still a little worse than that of the AirPods series, but it is also the best on the market. The default loudness of the voice prompts is sufficient, and you can also adjust it individually.

OPPO and OnePlus headsets still rely on the Huanlu app to link with other devices. Its UI design language is the same system as the current ColorOS. In the Huanlu app, in addition to basic operation customization, device switching, firmware upgrade and other functions, it also provides game mode switch and drop detection functions. The sound space discovered since the Clip2 era is also retained, and it even provides the function of pausing sleep music…

Enco X4 can realize speech translation in more than 20 languages on the software side, with a monthly usage limit of 5,000 minutes. It can also be realized on third-party mobile phones through the Huanlu app, which is not limited to European and American mobile phones. This is very good. Some additional explanations about this feature are also included here.

In actual use, in the scenarios of Chinese-English, Japanese-English, and Chinese-Japanese translation, it is relatively fast for reading and translating the voice material picked up by the headset. Basically, it will output the voice recognition result after a sentence is said, and then the translation result will be sent back, which can basically achieve sufficient practicality. However, in the pickup of the mobile phone (the other party speaks), it is occasionally difficult to completely record long sentences and automatically interrupt. Perhaps the optimization of different mobile phones needs to be strengthened. But in the scenario where the other party speaks to the mobile phone and sees the translation results, and you use headphones to listen to the translation results and listen to the translation results sent back, Enco X4 is available for daily conversations.

Let’s briefly talk about a few intelligent control functions.

Quick voice command is a function that operates through fixed voice command recognition. Basically, it can respond immediately after speaking the command accurately. However, it may be a little insensitive in an overly noisy environment, but it can still respond quickly in a quiet room. We tried Mandarin and Taiyuan dialects. The recognition accuracy of Mandarin is very good, but the recognition accuracy of Taiyuan dialect (in fact, the difference in pronunciation from standard Mandarin is not particularly big) is more difficult. Current recognition also requires speaking words accurately, without much ambiguity except to the extent of “previous song” and “previous song.”

The sensitivity of head movements is pretty good, but the range of movement needs to be slightly larger. The cervical spine health function based on the gyroscope has also been added, and more detailed head-down data statistics can be performed. The sensitivity of dialogue perception is relatively appropriate in a quiet environment, but it is still possible to activate it even if you whisper, which is very normal. It will resume the original playback state about five seconds after it recognizes that the speaking has stopped. This process is to fade in and out, and the media content is played at a lower volume. It is relatively natural and will not give you a “sudden braking” feeling.

Noise reduction, transparency, call|ANC, Transparency & Call

Thanks to the foaming on the front end of the silicone cover, Enco X4’s passive sound insulation is actually slightly better than similar cavities such as Free4 and

Let’s talk about active noise reduction, which still continues the complex noise reduction gear settings of OPPO products. Among them, the deep noise reduction gear is a state that can be calculated in real time. We can also perceive this when switching between wind noise and different scenes. However, it does not reduce the noise reduction depth to medium and light all at once. Instead, it makes gradual adjustments in ear pressure and low frequency for about seven or eight seconds. This design is quite comfortable. In addition, it also has a separate option to intelligently switch between three levels of intensity.

Under deep noise reduction, its noise reduction depth has a relatively obvious ability to weaken many low-frequency stable noises. The coverage of the lower part of the vocal frequency band is also relatively in place, and the effective bandwidth coverage is also good, reaching the current flagship level. Generally speaking, the depth and bandwidth performance are at the same level as vivo TWS 5 Pro, Freebuds Pro 5 and Galaxy Buds4 Pro. The attenuation intensity of the vocal frequency band is slightly lower than that of Galaxy Buds4 Pro and WF-1000XM6. In scenes such as subways, trains, and airplanes, its suppression of stationary mechanical noise is still slightly different from the previously mentioned models.

The definition of adaptive is a bit like the current adjustable approach after the iOS 27 update. You can choose whether you want a greater proportion of noise reduction or a greater proportion of transparency, or choose a moderate standard gear. Generally speaking, the standard gear is more noise-reducing than Apple’s adaptive middle gear in noisy environments.

However, there is one thing I must complain about. At least as far as the current firmware version (116.116.199) is concerned, the X4 will have a perceptible background noise when noise reduction (including adaptive and transparent) is turned on… For a user like me who is not sensitive to background noise, it is really not easy to have a background noise that I can detect with my first ears. Enco X4 has done it. But then again, does this also have an impact on long-term wearing and listening? That’s not necessarily the case. This problem still depends on your own tolerance level, and maybe there are some bugs in my machine. The ear pressure is well controlled, even with deep noise reduction.

In terms of anti-wind noise, it does not have an independent anti-wind noise mode. After deep noise reduction is turned on, it can perform relatively intelligent wind noise adaptation. Before adaptation, wind sources in the three directions will have wind noise effects, but after about seven or eight seconds of adaptation process, wind noise will be controlled to a state where it does not significantly affect listening.

The transparency mode has only one gear, which is not that complicated and has certain adaptive capabilities. Compared with the AirPods Pro series, its restoration of ambient sound still has a certain degree of attenuation at high frequencies, but overall it is relatively natural. The naturalness is good, the voice subject does not feel dull, and the dialogue scenes are quite easy to use. The wind noise suppression in Transparency Mode is also adaptable, but it seems that the filtered results are not as clean as in Deep Noise Reduction. It will reduce the intensity of the transparency mode after identifying wind noise, which will take time to adapt to for users who are sensitive to ear pressure.

OPPO specifically mentioned the independent recording function of the X4. Although it is only supported by the Find X5 series, Find N2 series, Reno 9 series, K10 series, and OnePlus 10 series, it shows that at least OPPO should be quite confident in the microphone of the Enco X4. It has VPU bone conduction microphone and 6nm NPU for AI noise reduction processing. We actually made calls in the operator’s environment. Its call pickup volume was moderate, the clarity was quite good, the tone was only slightly dull, the suppression of environmental noise was quite obvious, and the traces of interference were relatively easy to perceive. Enco X4 is said to be able to withstand wind noise during calls in Level 7 winds. In actual trials, wind sources from three directions have no significant impact on the clarity and coherence of the main body of the X4’s radio. It does a good job in this regard.

Generally speaking, the noise reduction capability of Enco X4 belongs to the first echelon level in noise reduction TWS. There is no problem with this. The computing power allows it to process sudden loud noises faster than the X3. It has no problem meeting the noise reduction needs of commuting and most scenes. However, it is basically at a similar level to the current generation products of vivo, Huawei and Samsung. There are no obvious shortcomings in terms of noise reduction depth, bandwidth coverage, transparency and adaptive correlation. Compared with the comprehensive noise reduction capabilities of WF-1000XM6 and AirPods Pro 3, it is still somewhat behind, but it can still be included in the In-Ear Skyline Level of the TDS noise reduction capability pyramid, and is ranked among the new products in this category.

By the way, the impact of noise reduction mode on sound is still audible, so you still need to pay attention to this.

Signal and battery life|Connection & Battery

As a TWS headset that supports the LHDC 5.0 1Mbps specification, we use LHDC’s standard test equipment LHDC One independent transmitter to conduct signal testing. It can only call the old version and use it at a sampling rate of 48kHz.

Enco X4’s basic signal performance is acceptable in the 48kHz scene connected to LHDC One and in AAC. Packet loss begins to occur at a distance of about 9m at a partition wall. However, packet loss within the unobstructed range of 9~11m is controllable. Stuttering problems will begin to occur beyond 11m. AAC connects iPhone 17 and Xperia 1 V and can remain relatively stable within a distance of about 10m.

For devices in the OPPO ecosystem, it can be speculated that there is no big problem in turning on LHDC on a daily basis.

Enco X4 supports Windows Swift Pair and also supports dual-device connection. In the interface of the Huanlu app, the priority of the multi-device switching function is mentioned as the first level, which is also a feature that OPPO emphasizes. However, in terms of the switching experience between LHDC and AAC devices, it is not completely smooth.

In terms of latency, it has a dedicated 39ms nominal low-latency game mode. We first connected the Xperia 1 V with the AAC codec in the default state. During streaming video and local video viewing, the delay was controlled at about half a word at normal speaking speed. After turning on low latency, it was less than half a word. We also tested the connection with the standard transmitter LHDC One at LHDC 48kHz. The delay when turning on the game mode is still about half a word, and it is more obvious when it is not turned on. Maybe OPPO’s own equipment will be better? After all, there was not much delay optimization during the LHDC 48kHz period.

In terms of battery life, OPPO officially provides very detailed test data. See the table for details:

After personal testing through standard procedures, I connected Xperia 1 V with AAC, turned off noise reduction and set the sound mode-related settings to default, and continuously played streaming music (Apple Music Lossless) and podcast programs (Little Universe) at 50% volume. The battery life of the headphones alone was 14 hours and 39 minutes. The fully charged state is taken into account, which is longer than the nominal value.

In terms of charging, we still conducted tests. It can charge relatively stably at 1.2~2.3W in the early stage, and around 0.9W for a long period in the later stage. It supports Qi standard wireless charging, but the way the charging coil is placed on the front is so strange that I even wonder if it is done to reveal the Dynaudio logo on the back…

Speaker, Sound Modes & Codec|Driver, Sound Modes & Codec

Like the X3, the Enco X4 is also equipped with a dual moving coil unit. This time it is a coaxial 11mm “super-transient cast diaphragm” moving coil and a 6mm micro-moving coil. It also has dual DAC crossover drives.

The supported encodings are SBC / AAC / LHDC 5.0 / LC3, but OPPO’s LHDC downward and cross-model compatibility has been a long-standing problem. In addition, it also supports LHDC Lossless 48kHz / 24bit gear for the first time, which can achieve a maximum code rate of 2.3Mbps. In short, it is another limited model.

Enco X4 also supports spatial audio, which is not strictly Dolby Atmos standard. Let’s run it according to the process. It can show a good amount of information behind the head, with only a slight sense of compression. The spatial presentation in three directions is also relatively regular, and the boundaries are relatively clear. There is still quite a lot of low-frequency reverberation, and the overall thickness has also increased. The sensitivity and accuracy of head tracking are both good.

The so-called “golden hearing” is based on ear canal scanning and similar hearing tests to generate an adjustment option based on six frequency bands. We roughly tried it and said that the mid-frequency can be improved in a higher range, but to be honest, the difference between before and after adjustment does not correspond to a big sense of hearing. The five preset sound modes are all marked by Dynaudio participation. In addition, there is a BassWave dynamic bass, but we do not recommend adding low frequencies… There is also a custom equalizer that can be adjusted by ±6dB at ten fixed frequency points. There is no Q value adjustment and frequency settings, but tuning can be shared.

Subjective description of sound|Sound Description

Based on LHDC encoding 48kHz, connected to LHDC One, the sound mode is “Dynaudio Original”, spatial audio is not turned on, golden hearing and low latency.

Enco X4’s low-frequency volume is moderate and slightly more, the thickness is relatively high, and the fullness is not excessive; the elasticity is okay, and the diving performance is good; the retracting and retracting speed is medium, retaining mild reverberation; the atmosphere has some halo and richness.

Enco X4 pays more attention to energy in the low frequency at LHDC 48kHz. It has a larger-but far less fat-low frequency body than AZ100 and Ear (3a). Compared with TWS 5 Pro and FreeBuds Pro 5, its low frequency will appear a little louder, and the sense of cohesion will not be particularly high. Instruments with fundamentals in the middle and lower walls have a slight forward tilt.

The distance between the mid-frequency vocals is relatively close, the mouth size is generally moderate, and the degree of sophistication is not emphasized; the texture of the vocals is given priority over the depiction of lines, the vocals have a certain thickness and the lines are less prominent; the tendency between male and female voices is not obvious, and is suitable for voices that are not too thin or bright, with a slight bonus for vocals in the upper and forward vocal positions; the graininess is slightly retained, and the smoothness is okay; the timbre has a slight tendency to be warmer, and is dyed in LHDC The lower part is still not too much; the position of the larynx is not high, and the proportion of breathy sounds is slightly more; the forward tilt of the drooling sounds is somewhat controlled, but it is still perceptible; the proportion of sibilance is not high, and it is not completely smoothed.

The transparency of the vocal frequency band is quite satisfactory, but there is no obvious artificial brightening.

In terms of musical instruments, most of them also give priority to texture over lines. Among stringed instruments, violins, violas, guitars, etc. all have a certain thickness, and the protrusion of the details of the plucked strings will be weaker; the cello is relatively thick and has a large proportion in the space; the momentum of the brass is OK, and the brightness of trumpets that need brightness is moderate; the naturalness of the woodwind is good, but it always feels a little thicker and lacks air. The naturalness of the overtones of the instrument is quite average.

Among the percussion instruments, Kick has a slightly higher presence, and Snare is not so fast. The brightness of cymbals is moderate, and the metallic and exciting feeling is not strong.

The high-frequency brightness is generally moderate, with two peaks that are not excessive, and the overall energy is not particularly accumulated. The extension capability of the extremely high frequency is improved compared to X3 and Free4, but compared with AZ80, WF-1000XM6, etc., the amount of information in the extremely high frequency is not rich. The roll-off will not be too early or too fast.

The sense of space is not large in scale, but the information in the space is relatively full, the horizontal and vertical distances are similar, and the sense of boundaries is relatively clear. Combined with the decent “height sense”, Enco X4 can present a slightly oblate spherical, relatively near-field space. The separation between vocals and instruments is okay, and the overall feel is good. The analytical ability is pretty good among TWS, a Qianyuan mobile phone manufacturer, with a slight “analytical feeling”; dynamics are not bad, and transients are acceptable.

Same conditions, AAC encoding connected to Xperia 1 V.

The richness of the low-frequency atmosphere will decrease, and the sense of halo will increase, making it appear more reverberant. The presence of the cymbals becomes higher, and some unnatural coloration is added to the upper part of the vocal. The X4 under AAC will sound lacking the fullness under LHDC, and it will suddenly appear “empty”. The whole space seems to be filled with something, and the naturalness and energy will become indescribably strange. This problem will be more serious if you switch to the “Dynamic High Resolution” setting.

In recent years, mobile phone manufacturers TWS have rarely seen models with obvious differences in tuning between AAC and high-bitrate encoding, but the X4 has now “recovered the feeling of the past”…

Summary evaluation|Overall Impression

The evaluation of Enco X4 will actually differ greatly depending on the transmitter (mobile phone). If you are a user of the European and American system, Enco X4 is a very useful product; but if you have a device with limited LHDC support, especially users of Apple, Huawei (new products in recent years), Samsung, Sony, etc. who do not have LHDC at all, it is no longer recommended to consider it from a sound perspective.

Therefore, the current positioning of Enco X4 is a bit like the products of Samsung and Huawei. They are more usable when paired with their own mobile phones and tablets, but are less versatile.

Let’s put it into the European and American system and see that the Enco X4 is obviously worth buying. It has the first level of comprehensive noise reduction capabilities in the thousand-yuan range and has no obvious shortcomings. It has good quality among mobile phone manufacturers’ products and relatively full, popular but not over-the-top tuning. There are no obvious problems in operation and detailed experience. But looking at the entire thousand-yuan market, its current version of firmware does not pay enough attention to AAC. Compared with TWS 5 Pro and Freebuds Pro 5, it can only be said that while they are competing with each other at the same level, AAC has a disadvantage in downtuning completion. Then we give a level IV evaluation. Whether it is worth buying depends on the above specific circumstances.
