“Zone Survival 2” is a survival adventure game developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Players will shrink to the size of an insect, explore the unknown, collect resources, build a base in a backyard full of dangers, and join hands with partners to embark on a microscopic adventure full of surprises and challenges.

At the just-held “Beijing Nuclear Fusion 2026” site, I interviewed Marcus Edward Morgan, the executive producer of this game. For him, this trip to China is not only an ordinary offline activity, but also a rare opportunity: to see with his own eyes what players on the other side of the ocean think of this game.

Marcus seemed quite excited when talking about his impressions of nuclear fusion. He told me that he had participated in many game exhibitions before, including Gamescom and the discontinued E3. However, even with so many experiences, this “nuclear fusion” still left a deep impression on him.

“To be honest, this is one of my favorite exhibitions.” He explained that he did not expect that so many players would come to experience the game. He is also very happy to see Chinese players having fun.

In fact, this “enthusiasm of Chinese players” is not without reason – in October this year, “Lockdown Survival 2” launched the autumn update “Rot and Ruin”, which brought a new area “Woodpile”, the long-awaited Centipede Boss, as well as new content such as base painting and potato beetle riders. For players who have been surviving in the backyard for a long time, these new things not only mean there are places to explore, but also mean that the familiar survival, combat and building gameplay are constantly changing.

Of course, the more updates there are, the more questions players will want to ask: What new areas will be coming next? How will the development team handle player feedback? What kind of challenges will those large, scalp-numbing insects bring?

With these questions in mind, Marcus and I started chatting. At the beginning of the interview, I mentioned my own affairs first. I told him that I often play Lockdown 2 with my wife and that she especially loves it. Hearing this, Marcus looked very happy and said with a smile: “Then you have to bring some of our peripherals back to her.”

This is a good start. After all, for a game like “Lockdown Survival 2”, teaming up with friends and family to explore the world is the most fun part of the game.

But soon I discovered that Marcus himself was quite an interesting interview subject.

“Mr. Drips” and the not-so-hidden secret

When talking about the game’s future update plans, I asked Marcus whether the team would prioritize expanding the map and adding new creatures and equipment, or continue to enrich the survival, construction, and exploration systems?

He told me that updates to “Confined Survival 2” are roughly divided into two types. One is more focused on content expansion, such as the previous “Into the Abyss” update, which focused on underwater areas and new exploration experiences; the other is more focused on functions and systems, such as the just-launched “Rot and Ruin”, in which base painting is one of the new features.

These two updates will occur alternately. In other words, players can look forward to new areas and new adventures without worrying about the stagnation of familiar gameplay.

The next content update will focus on new areas.

At this point, Marcus became cautious. “I have to think clearly about what can be said and what can’t be said yet.” He explained with a smile, “You may not know that I have a nickname when communicating with the community, called “Mr. Drips.” On the one hand, it is because I usually wear more interesting clothes, and on the other hand, it is because I can’t help but reveal some information. “

In fact, public relations manager Shyla Lane Schofie appeared at the interview together today, and was right next to the two of us at this time, to some extent to prevent him from talking too much. It seems that when interviewing an executive producer, sometimes you have to test the response speed of the public relations manager.

It happened that the photographer took the photos during the interview...
(The photographer just happened to take the photos during the interview…)

However, even though Marcus repeatedly reminded himself not to leak anything, he still revealed some news worth looking forward to: the next winter update will bring new exploration content, and there is still an area on the map that has yet to be explored by players. Players who are familiar with the existing map may already be able to guess its location.

What’s even more interesting is that this area is related to the place where the explosion occurred in the game’s opening scene. Players will have the opportunity to travel there and see what happened after the explosion. As for what exactly I will encounter, Marcus has not revealed it to me yet. After all, “Mr. Drips” was prone to spilling the beans, and he couldn’t be allowed to reveal all his cards before the interview was over.

In addition to new areas, he also mentioned a direction that he is looking forward to for players to experience: primitive science in the game, which is the purple technology points that players are familiar with – “If the primitive science continues to increase, how will it affect the players, and how will it affect the world around them?” I asked him.

This question may sound a bit abstract, but Marcus believes that this is exactly the direction that “Lockdown Survival 2” continues to explore. For a game that has already established a fairly complete survival world, new content does not necessarily just add a few insects and a few pieces of equipment. It can also start with systems that players are already familiar with and continue to dig deeper into what changes they can bring.

Of course, if you ask Marcus which updated direction he likes best, the answer may not be so abstract.

“I like difficult games,” he said. As “Confined Survival 2” gets closer to its official release, he hopes that players can use their previous accumulated experience to face increasingly challenging enemies and encounters. For him, the Centipede Boss in this update is a good example.

Players want Centipede, and the development team wants to see how scary it can be

The addition of Centipede was not a sudden idea from the development team. Marcus told me that this Boss itself comes from the expectations of the community. When planning subsequent content, the team will specifically sort out the suggestions made by players and incorporate them into the development plan.

“We’re always listening to the community,” he said. The development team sits down with the community manager every week to compile player feedback and discuss which issues should be prioritized. However, listening to opinions does not mean that the team will do what the players put forward.

Marcus gave a very noteworthy example: sometimes players will point out problems with a certain feature and also propose solutions that they think are feasible. But developers need to further clarify where the problem lies. Because the solutions proposed by players may not be the most appropriate choice, only by finding the reasons behind the problem can the experience be fundamentally improved.

The team also wants to explain its decision to players as candidly as possible. If a certain suggestion will be adopted, they will try to explain how it will be adjusted; if it cannot be implemented for the time being, they also hope that players can understand the reasons behind it.

For Marcus, this constant communication was an interesting part of developing Lockdown 2. When the game officially launches version 1.0, he hopes players can feel that they have indeed participated in the growth of the game.

Centipede is an example of players’ opinions eventually being fed back into the game.

But the community’s voice is only part of the story. When designing new areas, the development team will also think about which insects are suitable to become bosses and which creatures can bring players a terrifying and interesting experience. The centipede itself has such characteristics: it moves quickly, has a slender body, and can easily cause discomfort when moving with multiple legs.

More importantly, it also fits well with the “Woodpile” area of this update. There are termites and other creatures in this area, and the appearance of centipedes is also related to their environment. The team hopes to find a balance between their own fantasy and the habits of real creatures, so that players can feel that the world is both full of imagination and has some understandable logic.

As for how to transform the centipede’s biological characteristics into a combat mechanism, Marcus’s answer is also very straightforward: first observe how it acts in reality – he said: “One of the most scary things about the centipede is that it moves very fast. It will crawl and turn quickly, making it difficult for you to judge what it will do next.” And its shell is very hard, so attacking the body blindly is not the most effective way. Players need to seize the opportunity to attack its relatively vulnerable belly.

In other words, this battle isn’t just about putting a giant centipede into the game and giving it a long health bar. The development team hopes that players can gradually figure out how to deal with it from its appearance and habits.

Of course, it can be a challenge just to stay calm when faced with a centipede that’s far larger than you are. I also asked Marcus a more practical question: As players become more familiar with the game, how can the team find a balance between combat difficulty and mechanical complexity?

His answer is that the development team will adjust the game experience according to player groups at different stages.

In the early access stage, players who enter the game are often more familiar with the gameplay and more willing to challenge difficult content, so the team can try to add more complex mechanisms and more powerful bosses. But when a big update brings in new players, the development team revisits the entire onboarding section.

For example, in the previous underwater update “Into the Abyss”, as a new group of players joined, the team will consider how to make it easier for people who enter the game for the first time to get started. The scope of adjustments includes not only guidance, but also the location of creatures and the exploration routes that players can choose.

This means that the development team is not only considering whether a certain boss battle is exciting enough, but also at what stage the players encounter it and how much experience they have accumulated before. For a survival game that continues to expand content, the challenges can get higher and higher, but players also need to have a step to gradually adapt to this world.

Color the base and give players a little more space for themselves

Of course, Lockdown 2 is not a game focused solely on combat.

For many players, collecting materials, building a base, and then expanding their nest little by little is also an important part of the fun in the game. The base painting function added in this “Rot and Ruin” update is a good example.

I asked Marcus, since players can already build a variety of buildings, why didn’t the team add the ability to color the base until this update?

His explanation is that the development team hopes to first provide a rich enough set of construction parts, and then gradually expand the personalized adjustments that players can make. Color is not just a simple decorative option: if not done correctly, some materials with a natural texture can look strange when painted with color.

Therefore, the team has also placed some restrictions on the objects that can be painted. Building components such as walls, floors, and ceilings can be adjusted using the paint tool, but not all fixtures and functional objects can be painted.

Of course, this does not mean that these restrictions will never change in the future. “After players actually start using this feature, we will definitely continue to make adjustments based on their feedback.” Marcus said.

I think this is a very interesting development idea. For construction gameplay, player needs are often not all anticipated at the beginning. Some may just want their base to look prettier, while others may use the different colors as a way of marking them or even develop their own building style around it. After the function is launched, how many tricks players can play will in turn become a reference for the development team to continue to improve the system.

In this update, players also get a new way to travel: the Potato Beetle Rider. I asked Macus, “What’s the difference between it and the previous Ladybug ride?”

Marcus describes it as an updated version of the Ladybug Bug Ride.

“It has stronger defense and is more durable. At the same time, the cannon on its back can provide more options for fighting. There are different equipment and growth levels in “Lockdown Survival 2”. As players continue to advance the game, they also need more powerful tools to face new challenges. The Potato Beetle Rider is designed on this basis.

Not only is it stronger, it also allows players to deal with new enemies in different ways. This design is closely related to the pace of growth in the game: the deeper players explore, the more new tools they need to deal with more dangerous environments. The Insect Rider is not just a convenient means of transportation, but has become part of the player’s way of combat and exploration.

From centipede bosses to base paints to new bug riders, the content covered in this update looks different, but they all ultimately point in the same direction: to continue to expand what players can “do” in this world. For “Confined Survival 2” itself, these additional gameplays are more like the fruits of a leafy tree that continues to grow to the outside world.

From bugs to mysterious people: we also want to bring some new encounters

When it comes to player feedback, I also asked Marcus if there was any reaction that surprised the development team, or made them realize that a certain design direction might be more popular than expected. He thought for a while and mentioned a change related to combat: in “Confined Survival 2”, players finally have the opportunity to fight against a human enemy.

This mysterious man stalks players throughout the game. Compared with the first generation of battles that mainly faced insects, such an opponent obviously brings a different feeling – players no longer face just a creature with special habits, but an opponent with abilities similar to themselves.

Marcus said that the team was a little nervous before, not knowing how players would accept such a design. But the results made them quite happy, and players responded well to this part of the content.

“We want to add more different types of encounters to the game,” he said. “We want to continue to expand what players can experience in this world, not just keep adding new insects.”

I think this is also what the follow-up content of “Lockdown Survival 2” deserves attention. As players gradually become familiar with the habits of insects, the matching of equipment, and the rhythm of combat, if all the challenges are bigger bugs, thicker armor, and higher damage, the game experience will inevitably become repetitive. New enemy types have the opportunity to change the way players judge danger.

Of course, Marcus did not reveal more in the interview as to what kind of encounters will be added. However, combined with the content update direction he mentioned before, the team obviously does not want players to never encounter new surprises after becoming familiar with the existing gameplay.

When you get smaller, there’s an adventure around every corner

According to Marcus, the most attractive aspect of the “Lockdown Survival” series is an almost childlike fantasy.

When we usually walk outdoors and see grass, stones, and insects, we often don’t feel anything special. But if one day we suddenly shrink to the size of an ant, the originally familiar environment will become a completely different world. Blades of grass become towering woods, some inconspicuous little things can become huge obstacles, and an ordinary exploration can turn into an adventure.

“You can imagine what the world would be like if you were very small,” Marcus said.

He hopes that Lockdown 2 can immerse players in this experience as much as possible. In the future, more creatures, more areas, and more fantasy to explore will be added to make this world richer.

He gave a very vivid example: For a person shrunk to the size of an ant, climbing an ice cream cone may be as spectacular as climbing Mount Everest.

This is also what he thinks is the most special thing about games – when our perspective changes, ordinary things can become incredible.

However, Marcus then added another aspect that he valued: the feeling of playing games with friends.

He hopes that players will get not only the fun of exploring a wonderful world in “Lockdown Survival 2”, but also an experience that feels like returning to childhood. Everyone gets together, uses their imagination, faces the troubles in adventure together, and shares unexpected discoveries together.

This connection exists both between players and players, and between players and the development team. Player feedback will affect the development of the game, and the experience of playing together may become a cherished memory for the players themselves.

While talking about this, Marcus suddenly asked me, “What do you think is the reason why you like “Lockdown Survival 2″ the most?”

I told him that although the setting of “Zone Survival 2” is easily reminiscent of the adventure fantasy of teenagers, this game unexpectedly attracted me, a player who is about to turn 40 years old.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have as many electronic entertainment devices as we do now. When you’re with friends, a lot of fun comes from simple things: playing in the mud, piles of sand, or holding a toy and imagining the environment in front of you as a larger world. As I grew up, these experiences seemed to drift away from me, but in “Lockdown Survival 2”, I found that feeling again.

Marcus laughed very happily after hearing this. He said that at this point, everyone is the same. He believes that games can certainly appeal to young players, but they should also be suitable for adults, parents and families. For young players, it can be a brand new fantasy; for those who have grown up, it can also allow people to rediscover their past imagination.

I told Marcus that when we are usually busy at work, my wife and I sometimes rarely have the opportunity to communicate as we did in the past. But since we played “Lockdown Survival 2” together, we have regained a lot of childhood memories and regained many common topics. This is something I didn’t expect at all when I started playing this game.

After hearing this, Marcus said that he was very happy to hear some good things that he had not expected. Then he curiously asked me this question: Obviously the environment in the game is not China’s backyard, why can it still bring such a sense of nostalgia?

My answer is that the most important thing may be the matter of “getting smaller” itself.

When we were children and played with toys, we often imagined that we were the characters in the toys and went on a big adventure on the windowsill or in the room. Just like “Toy Story”, when we observe the world from the perspective of a toy, the originally familiar environment will become strange and wonderful.

After listening, Marcus said that this is exactly the feeling he hopes the game can convey: Although the living environments in different countries and regions are different, imagining yourself becoming very small and re-understanding the world from another perspective is a fantasy that is easily relatable.

Regarding Chinese players, there is another news worth looking forward to

When talking about the resonance between different cultures, I also asked Marcus a question: The background of the “Lockdown Survival” series is easily reminiscent of the backyard culture of the United States, but the living environment of Chinese players is not exactly the same as that of the United States. Has the team ever worried that this cultural difference will affect the experience of Chinese players?

Marcus admitted that this is indeed a question that the team will think about, and it does not only happen in China-different regions have different living environments and common organisms. For example, the British may be more accustomed to calling their outdoor spaces a garden, rather than a backyard in the American context.

But he believes that the core experience of “Lockdown Survival 2” is not limited to the lifestyle of a certain country. No matter where you live, most people have seen insects, and have probably imagined how the world around them would change if they suddenly became very small. Although the scene in the game is a park, the imagination it carries does not require players to actually own a backyard to understand.

At the same time, the team is also considering whether to further expand the game’s environment and cultural expression in the future, so that players in different regions can find more familiar elements.

Now that we have reached this point, of course I have not let go of the last question: “Is it possible to add some Chinese elements to the game in the future? Whether it is architecture, decoration, or insects unique to China, I think they can all become a direction.”

Marcus gave a very curt answer: “Yes.”

He said the team has been surprised and grateful for the support “Lockdown Survival 2” has received in China. Therefore, they also hope to add more content to the game that Chinese players will feel familiar with. As for what that will be, there are currently no details available to the public.

However, he also revealed a clearer plan:As the game moves towards the official version 1.0, the team will add Chinese voices to the game.

This work is not only to allow players to read less text, but also to allow everyone to hear the characters’ voices directly and immerse themselves in this world more naturally.

I suddenly thought of his identity as “Mr. Dips” and quickly asked, “Wait, is this the first time this news has been revealed to the public?”

Marcus smiled again, patted me on the shoulder and said:“Yes, this is exclusive news specially revealed to you.”

Since you have said so, I will accept it more respectfully than as ordered.

Conclusion

At the end of the interview, I once again expressed my love for “Lockdown 2” to Marcus, and I hope that the Obsidian team can continue to bring more works in the future that allow people to rediscover their childhood and re-imagine.

For “Confined Survival 2”, new maps, new insects, new Bosses, and an increasingly rich construction system are of course an important part of the game’s continued development. But for me, the most special thing about this game is that it allows a person who has grown up and is busy with work every day to once again immersively imagine what the world in front of him would look like if he became as small as an ant. What’s even more surprising is that this imagination can also be shared with the people closest to you, and eventually becomes a memory shared by two people.

This is exactly what Marcus and his team hope to achieve: whether they are children who are exposed to games for the first time, or players who have grown up and occasionally miss their childhood, they can regain the familiar curiosity and start a big adventure of their own in this amplified world.

Perhaps this is also the reason why “Lockdown Survival 2” can transcend cultural and age boundaries and allow players from different places to find resonance.

After all, people will always grow up, but as long as curiosity is still there, your own adventure will never end.
